Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith appears to be distancing himself from the idea of running for president in 2028.
During a recent interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Smith addressed the growing speculation about whether he would consider a future campaign for the White House. Over the past year, Smith has occasionally been mentioned in political discussions and media commentary as a potential presidential candidate. However, in a preview of Hannity’s upcoming podcast episode, the ESPN personality made it clear that giving up his current income would be a major factor in his decision.
Smith responded directly when Hannity asked him about the speculation surrounding a presidential run. According to the preview clip, the conversation addressed whether Smith truly had intentions to run for office or if the idea was simply media speculation. “I think it’s all bulls—,” Hannity told Smith. “I don’t think you’re running. Am I right?”
Smith answered honestly about the financial realities tied to public office. “I don’t think I’m running either, because I got to give up my money,” Smith responded. “Yeah, I ain’t giving up my money, Sean.”
The exchange quickly gained attention online because Smith has occasionally discussed political topics publicly, leading some observers to speculate about whether he could enter politics in the future.

His political talk show, titled “Straight Shooter with Stephen A.,” has given him a platform to discuss policy issues, government leadership, and current events. Because of this expanded media presence, some commentators have speculated that Smith could potentially transition into a political role in the future.
However, the interview with Hannity suggests that Smith does not see himself leaving his media career anytime soon. His comments indicate that he values his current work and financial success more than the possibility of pursuing public office.
Financial comparisons also highlight the gap between Smith’s current earnings and the salary of the president of the United States. According to reporting from The New York Times, Smith’s base annual salary from ESPN and SiriusXM is estimated at around $33 million. When additional revenue from his YouTube channel and podcast are included, the total reportedly approaches $40 million per year.
In contrast, the salary of the president of the United States is $400,000 annually.

At the time, he made it clear that he had not completely ruled out the idea.
“I’m not ruling anything out, but I’m not thinking about that right now.”
Smith also repeated a point that has remained consistent in several interviews. His current career, along with the income it provides, makes the idea of running for president less appealing.
“I love what I do, and I’m not willing to give up my money,” he added.
Since then, Smith has continued to discuss politics publicly through his media platforms. His commentary often covers government leadership, economic policy, and political debates from both parties.
Despite his strong opinions on national issues, Smith has not taken any official steps toward launching a campaign. His latest remarks suggest that the speculation may remain just that for the foreseeable future.
Stephen A. Smith Names Political Leaders He Would Support
During the same conversation with Hannity, Smith also discussed which political figures he believes are qualified for the presidency. Hannity asked him to name three individuals he would support for the position.
Smith identified three current political leaders from both major parties.
He first mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who currently serves in a Republican leadership role. Smith also named two Democratic governors: Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Wes Moore of Maryland.
While discussing Rubio, Smith offered an explanation for why he believes the senator could be a strong candidate.
He described Rubio as “an adult in the room,” adding, “There is no questioning his qualifications for the job.”
Smith also confirmed that he would support Rubio over several other prominent Democrats if those candidates were on the ballot.
“Yes. I’d vote for Marco Rubio over anybody that’s out there right now other than Wes Moore or Josh Shapiro,” Smith said.
