Dennis Quaid is a survivor.
The 71-year-old star shined brightly in the 1980s and 1990s, racking up sizable roles in films like “The Right Stuff,” “Great Balls of Fire” and “The Big Easy.” He battled addiction along the way, leaning on his faith to get clean and sober.
He kept working across genres, eventually shifting to supporting roles in recent years. That’s no small feat in an uber-competitive industry like Hollywood.
His biggest career trick came courtesy of “Reagan.” Quaid not only starred as the 40th president but admitted he voted for President Donald Trump during the extended press tour. The new Hollywood Blacklist that targets conservative stars either gave him a pass or recognized his talent can’t be denied.
How do we know?
He’s kept on working despite his political views, including new films like “War Machine” and “I Can Only Imagine 2.”
Now, he’s coming under fire from a colleague for his right-leaning views.
Quaid co-starred with Nick Offerman in “Sovereign.” The film finds the “Parks & Recreation” alum playing an extremist whose distrust of the government leads to a violent confrontation. Quaid plays a local police chief investigating the matter.
Offerman brought up the experience with Quaid on the far-Left podcast “Lovett or Leave It,” hosted by former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett.
Offerman describes Quaid as a “crazy Trump guy with a gospel record.”
“Right after we finished the movie, he suddenly came out with a gospel country record and went on Tucker Carlson and f***ing [Sean] Hannity to play his Trump gospel songs,” Offerman said, smiling.
“What? He’s a hero of my life. I’ve looked up to him. He’s a great actor,” Offerman said.
Lovett mentioned that the actor’s brother, Randy Quaid, was the “crazy” one. Randy Quaid left Hollywood several years ago under dubious circumstances and remains outside the system.
“He was very crazy and he went away, but Dennis kept it under wraps until last year,” he continued. “But he’s now gone.”
