Bill Maher doesn’t pull his punches when it comes to the “woke mind virus.”
The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host routinely attacks the progressive ideology, earning him plenty of anger from his fellow liberals.
Still, even by the comedian’s standards, he threw some haymakers at the hard Left ideology on “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
The meeting of the free-thinking minds on Spotify this weekend didn’t disappoint. The episode found the comedians agreeing on most topics, from free speech to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rogan doesn’t rage against former President Donald Trump like Maher does, but otherwise they sang from a similar hymnal.
Case in point: How the woke mob views race as the all-important barometer of a person’s worth. Maher, to no one’s surprise, chafes at that state of mind.
Still, the words he used in the process proved stunning.
“I’m always trying to make the case that liberal is a different animal than [woke] because it is .. you can be woke, but don’t say somehow it’s an extension of liberalism. It’s most often an undoing of liberalism… I’ve always believed in a color-blind society. The goal is to not see race at all, anywhere for any reason. That’s what’s what liberals always believed, all the way through Obama going back to Kennedy, everybody, Martin Luther King [Jr.],” Maher said.
“That’s not what the woke believe. They believe race is first and foremost the thing you always should see everywhere. Which I find is interesting because that used to be the position of the Klu Klux Klan, that we see race first and foremost everywhere,” Maher said. “So, again, you can have that position, but don’t say that’s a liberal position. You’re doing something very different.”
Rogan tried to defend the woke mindset, clearly playing devil’s advocate in the process by suggesting woke attempts to re-balance society in a more equitable fashion. Except the Spotify superstar quickly rejected Identity Politics as the potential solution.
“I think the colorblind way is the way to truly achieve equality and to truly judge people based on their merits,” Rogan said, adding the culture must do a better job of addressing the real problems plaguing America, including a lack of role models and communities that lack hope and “financial opportunities.”
“It’s extreme poverty and extreme crime, and these things don’t get addressed,” Rogan said. “A lot of the policies coming from places like San Francisco and Portland, they just exacerbate it. You can’t just steal, you can’t just have everybody walk into Walmart and steal.”
“LIberalism was never ‘shoplifting is progressive,’ and we weren’t interested in legalizing shoplifting, or I should call it ‘justice shopping,'” Maher said.
Maher noted the move to defund the police following George Floyd’s death in 2020 backfired, and how some rich liberals hired former police officers to protect them from the rising wave of crime.
“Their neighborhoods stayed safe. That wasn’t necessarily a victory for liberalism,” Maher said.
Rogan noted that Austin, Texas, where he moved after leaving California, initially defunded some of its police following Floyd’s death but eventually re-funded law enforcement after crime rates exploded.
“Where my club is on Sixth Street, that’s a wild place,” Rogan said of the Comedy Mothership. “There’s a lot of crime there … we hire off-duty cops to work the club and a lot of security. We want to make it as safe as possible.”
“So many places aren’t course correcting,” the podcaster added regarding the calamitous “defund” decision.
Maher brought up soaring crime rates in Chicago as another data point.
Then, he said what no Black Lives Matter activist will dare say.
“It’s amazing that black lives don’t seem to matter when they’re taken by black lives,” Maher said, adding his friends on the ground in Chicago say the whole city is no longer safe.
Later, Maher critiqued the “body positivity” movement, saying excessive weight is an unhealthy way to live life and should be discouraged to help save lives.. Rogan agreed, and the two noted how medical professionals refused to even broach the subject during the pandemic despite the overwhelming evidence that obesity was a sizable risk factor for those who contract COVID-19.
In fact, Maher said no subject generates as much anger toward him as the weight issue does.
