A Chicago man has been charged with following and fatally shooting a 9-year-old girl in the head, claiming she was “too loud” while playing outside and riding on her scooter.

According to reports, 43-year-old Michael Goodman faces a charge of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Serabi Medina. Last Saturday (August 5) around 9:20 p.m., police were called to Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood after the shooting in the 3500 block of North Long Avenue.

A neighbor and witness to the incident said that the young child was riding around on her scooter just moments before being shot in the head. The neighbor and other witnesses confirmed that Goodman reportedly killed the girl because he was upset over her “being too loud” while playing outside.

Police said while the girl’s father was speaking to friends inside of a car, she was on her scooter at an ice cream truck when a gunshot let off. The girl’s father told her to go back home and that’s when Goodman left his apartment building with a gun in hand. As he followed the girl towards her home, the father yelled at him to stop him, and then Goodman shot the girl in the head on the sidewalk outside of her house.

The father rushed over and “football tackled” Goodman. Witnesses said that during the tackle and fight on the ground, the father shot Goodman in the face as the weapon discharged amid the struggle.

Police said Goodman was arrested upon their arrival and transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for his gunshot wound. In Goodman’s mugshot, he can be seen with bloody stitches on the left side of his face. Following his arrest, Goodman appeared in court at the Leighton Criminal Courts building, where he was denied bond in the shooting.

Apparently, this wasn’t the first time that Goodman has had an issue with the local children playing in the neighborhood. Witnesses said that he had been told several times before to not be so concerned with the children at play because they’re just being kids and having fun.

According to the Medina Family, the young girl and her father had a strong bond and had been living in the neighborhood for about two years. They moved to the area trying to get a fresh start after the young girl’s mother was murdered in 2018. The family also said that the 9-year-old was a normal kid who loved riding her scooter, making new friends, and playing with them.
