Well-respected actor Morgan Freeman made some strong remarks in a rare interview and it’s sparking mixed reactions online.
Freeman, 85, told The Sunday Times’s Culture magazine: “Two things I can say publicly that I do not like. Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month?” He also said, “Also, ‘African American’ is an insult. I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African American’. What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”
During the interview, The Sunday Times reporter also mentioned Denzel Washington, who once said, “I’m very proud to be Black, but Black is not all I am.” Freeman added: “Yes, exactly. I’m in total agreement. You can’t define me that way.” Social media users have been unpacking his comments with some people agreeing with the entertainer while others appear to be a little taken back.

Americans. I have the same number of Black, White and Native American relatives. I totally understand what he means.” A fourth went on to say, “I’m sorry Morgan freeman but I disagree. I’m heavy on the ‘African’ American. I don’t want or care to be called ‘American’ for what? I love my roots & various african countries that make up who I am! I don’t care to be associated with them colonizers.”

I wrote an article taking issue with being called African American. Seems like Morgan Freeman agrees. Do they call white people British American's? https://t.co/Q7Xp7MdlTS

@TMZLive I agree with Morgan Freeman about the title African American. I never use that term for myself because I am a “mongrel” of many countries. BUT…all people evolved from Africa…so technically, we’re all African descendants.

He makes valid points. But if we didn't have Black History Month, Black history would be forgotten, especially with the likes of DeSatan forcing schools to ignore Blacks & their achievements

I AGREE WITH BOTH DENZEL WASHINGTON & MORGAN FREEMAN. BLACK IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY, JUST LIKE WHITE ISN'T MINE. IN ADDITION, IF YOU WERE BORN IN THE UNITED STATES, YOU ARE AN AMERICAN OF WHATEVER COUNTRY IN AFRICA DESCENT. YOU ARE NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN UNLESS YOU WERE BORN IN AFRICA

Racism will never go away as long as there are racists! Morgan freeman is wrong about that. But i agree with him about African American being an insult. WE ARE AMERICANS, period. Black Latinos, Jamaicans etc. are not called African. Why are we Black Americans called African?… https://t.co/pmX2QYILEz
