Anita Pointer, one of the founding members of the ‘70s and ‘80s band The Pointer Sisters, has passed away, the singer’s family confirmed over the weekend. “While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter, Jada, and her sisters June & Bonnie and at peace,” the statement read, further mentioning that Anita died at her Beverly Hills home on Saturday. after losing her battle with cancer.
“She was the one that kept all of us close and together for so long. Her love of our family will live on in each of us. … Heaven is a more loving beautiful place with Anita there.” Anita’s only daughter Jada Pointer passed away from cancer back in 2003 while her sisters June and Bonnie died in 2006 and 2020, respectively. The siblings, alongside sister Ruth.

Anita had quit her job working as a secretary in 1969 to join The Pointer Sisters, who amassed 13 top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985. Some of their biggest hits include “Neutron Dance,” “Jump,” “Automatic,” and “He’s So Shy.” Socialites, help us in sending your thoughts and prayers to the Pointer family during this difficult time.
Outside of their discography, The Pointer Sisters also saw plenty of collaborations, including the all-star “We Are the World” charity single back in 1985. The siblings received their long-awaited Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 1994, while some of their biggest accolades throughout their career include three Grammys — one of which they received from winning a country category at the annual awards ceremony.
“This has been a wonderful career. I didn’t plan any of this,” Anita previously told Goldmine. Speaking of how she fell into the music business, she said, “I was planning on continuing to being a secretary in a law office, like I was doing, when I heard Bonnie and June singing in the Northern California State Youth Choir, performing ‘Oh Happy Day,’ with Edwin Hawkins and Dorothy Morrison, and I just loved it. So I quit my job and said that I had to do this too.”
