Wrapping up a legendary weekend celebrating the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th of The Blueprint, Sunday night’s “Extra Innings” finale gave New York City a night they’ll be talking about for decades. The biggest shock of the night? Bad Gal Riri herself, Rihanna, stepped onto the stage in a rare, live appearance that absolutely lit up the BX and social media.
But getting to that point was a whole movie in itself. The streets outside the stadium were pure chaos, with rumors flying after a massive group of fans reportedly rushed the gates, forcing the venue into an immediate security lockdown. For four long hours, thousands of people, including stars like Fabolous and Wale were left stuck in the muggy July air, wondering if the show was even going to happen.
It wasn’t until shortly after midnight that the gates finally opened up and the crowd trickled in. When Hov finally took the stage, he didn’t just sweep the drama under the rug. He stood at the mic, looked out at his city, and kept it 100 with the people who waited. “They closed the door for you guys’ safety and everyone’s safety outside,” Jay-Z told the crowd, apologizing for the massive delay. “There’s 10,000 people outside; I don’t want to start the music and people get trampled. I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was OK. I appreciate your patience.”
Once the apology was out of the way, the King of New York reminded everyone why he’s top tier. The midnight oil was burning, but the energy shifted from frustrated to electric the second Rihanna came out of nowhere. Looking effortless and radiant, Rih blessed the mic to perform “B*tch Better Have My Money” and teamed up with Hov for an iconic rendition of “Run This Town.” The crowd completely lost its collective mind, flooding social media with clips of the rare link-up.
As if a Rihanna sighting wasn’t enough to solidify the night, the Queen Supreme herself, Beyoncé, returned to the stage to keep the royal energy flowing. After already setting the stadium on fire on Friday night by subbing in for Mary J. Blige on “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” Bey came back out Sunday to show love, anchoring a star-studded lineup that also included heavy hitters like Pharrell, Usher, and Fat Joe. By the time the lights finally came up in the Bronx, the four-hour wait felt like a distant memory. Hov proved once again that even when things get delayed, a Roc Nation party is always right on time.
