The long wait is officially over. A famous writer named E. Jean Carroll just received a massive payment of $5,625,005.48 from Donald Trump. For three long years, Trump used every legal trick in the book to avoid paying up after a courtroom jury ruled against him. But the court system basically said “enough is enough” and handed over the cash!

This whole problem started because of something that happened a long time ago. Carroll said that she had a chance run-in with Trump at a luxury department store in New York City back in 1996. She explained that Trump took her into a dressing room and sexually abused her. When she finally told the world her story in a book in 2019, Trump called her a liar. Because he called her a liar, she sued him for defamation.
Now, Trump has completely denied everything from the start. He has claimed multiple times that he does not even know who Carroll is. He even said she was making up the whole story just to sell her new book. But in 2023, a jury of regular citizens listened to both sides and decided Trump was lying. They found him responsible for the sexual abuse and the lies, and they told him he had to pay her $5 million.
Instead of paying right away, Trump put the $5 million into a locked court bank account while his lawyers tried to fight the decision. They took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, which is the most powerful court in America. But the Supreme Court refused to help him. Because the money sat in that account for so long during the fight, it grew an extra $625,000 just in interest. A judge named Lewis Kaplan finally ordered the money to be released, saying, “It’s time for him to ‘do equity’ and pay the judgment”.
When the victory became official, Carroll was filled with joy. She posted on her blog in all capital letters: “WE WON! THIS WIN IS FOR EVERY WOMAN IN THE WORLD!” Her main lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, told the news, “Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her”. Trump is still fighting a completely separate courtroom loss where another jury said he owes Carroll $83 million for continuing to say mean things, but Carroll’s team is happily celebrating this first major win.
