Can you imagine being the blame for causing severe diarrhea, scaring folks away from your products, only for the feds to hit you with a massive “my bad” days later!?! Well, that’s exactly the wild reality Taylor Farms is living through right now…
After the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put the mega produce supplier on blast, linking their shredded iceberg lettuce to a nasty parasite outbreak at Taco Bell locations across five states, the government had to completely walk back their claims. It turns out the laboratory test that initially pointed the finger at the company’s Mexican facility was nothing more than a giant false positive.
In a post titled “Today, FDA apologized to us,” Taylor Farms gave an update to its customers stating, “Yesterday, FDA intormed Taylor Fresh Foods that one of its iceberg lettuce products trom central Mexico had a “confirmed positive” test for cyclospora. Today, we were intormed that FDA made a mistake, and this was a talse positive. To be clear, at this moment, FDA has not identitied single positive product test result for Cyclospora.
Acting on initial information provided by health officials, in an abundance of caution, we completed a voluntary recall of iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. Recalled product was limited to iceberg lettuce grown and processed in central Mexico.”
The statement continued, “All other Taylor Farms products, including all Taylor Farms brand products, are not involved in the recall.
Our thoughts remain with everyone who has fallen ill in this outbreak. We are committed to working with public health authorities as the ongoing outbreak investigation continues.”
So how the hell did this all happen? More than 1,600 people fell victim to Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite that wreaks absolute havoc on your stomach. Desperate to find a culprit for the summer outbreak, the FDA rushed out a traceback investigation pointing directly at Taylor Farms de Mexico, prompting Taco Bell to immediately yank the lettuce from its supply chain nationwide.

But on Sunday, the FDA dropped a quiet correction that completely flipped the script. According to the agency’s official update, their lab experts did a anotjer review of the original lettuce sample and realized they completely botched the read.
Due to the complex nature of detecting the Cyclospora parasite, the feds admitted that the previous positive result “does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive”. And just like that, the smoking gun evaporated, and the FDA confirmed they currently have zero validated positive samples connecting Taylor Farms’ product to the sickness.
Even though they got wrongfully dragged in the court of public opinion, Taylor Farms is trying to keep it classy while protecting their brand.
As for Taco Bell, they are already moving on and trying to make sure customers feel safe hitting up the drive-thru again. The fast-food giant took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure fans that they handled the situation instantly, writing, “We want you to hear it from us. We take your health and safety seriously and have removed all affected Taylor Farms lettuce from Taco Bell stores. So go ahead and enjoy your Taco Bell today. You always got us. We always got you. See you in the drive-thru”.
Meanwhile, the feds are right back at square one, trying to figure out what actually triggered this stomach turning disaster.
