Donald Trump Says Canada Will Face Tariffs Over Wildfire Smoke

President Trump is sounding off on Canada, putting the country on blast over the massive wildfires that have been sending thick, hazy smoke drifting across the Midwest and East Coast. The President isn’t holding back, calling out the Canadian government for what he’s labeling “willful negligence.”

Taking to Truth Social, Trump didn’t mince words: “We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!”

It’s a serious situation for millions of Americans, with over a dozen states currently under air quality alerts. From Chicago to D.C., officials are urging everyone to play it safe—staying indoors or masking up to escape the hazardous, smoggy conditions.

According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre in Winnipeg, there are nearly 900 active fires burning, with Ontario, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories hit the hardest. Even more concerning? Fewer than 100 of those infernos are currently considered “under control.”

Trump revealed he’s planning a direct line to Prime Minister Mark Carney to demand answers, accusing the Canadian leadership of failing to step up on basic forest management and debris removal.

“This is Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying,” the president added.

But Prime Minister Carney isn’t letting the drama slide. During a Thursday press conference in London, Ontario, he kept his cool while throwing some major shade back at the Trump administration’s own environmental track record.

“Fighting climate change is the responsibility of all countries, including the United States,” Carney told reporters in French, according to The Canadian Press.
