What’s a terrible, no good way to promote your new TV show?
Insult a large swath of the potential audience. It’s what Elizabeth Banks just did while promoting Peacock’s “The Miniature Wife.”
The new series, co-starring Matthew Macfadyen, casts Banks as a wife who is accidentally shrunk by her inventor husband. Based on a short story by Manual Gonzales, the dramedy looks to explore the power dynamic within the marriage in question.
The show has particular appeal to women, who may be intrigued by the show’s subtext. Not all marriages are created equal. Sometimes the man has select advantages in our culture.
The reverse can be true, too, but the subject is still ripe for dramatic possibilities.
Except Banks just targeted women who dared to vote for President Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential election.
The actress and sometimes director broke down one of her signature roles to the Bustle podcast. In the process, she attacked a key part of the MAGA movement. Banks played Effie Trinket in the “Hunger Games” movie trilogy, a character who began as part of a fascist regime but later saw the error of her ways.
“I think in ‘Catching Fire’ when she’s like, ‘I want to be part of this team,’ and you really see her struggling and then by the end she’s like a revolutionary… I wish more of us were becoming revolutionaries!” she added. “Effie is the model, guys! I don’t understand the 53 percent of white ladies that didn’t vote for Kamala.”
To Banks, being a “revolutionary” is voting for the vice president of the current regime? Does she understand what the word even means?
Let’s set aside the silliness of an entitled Hollywood actress demanding other people (not her) become “revolutionaries.” That’s as ludicrous as Giancarlo Esposito calling for a revolution against ICE.
Focus on the rest of her screed.
Why doesn’t she understand Trump’s white female base? Has she met any of them? Talked to them? Heard what they had to say? Understood why they saw the consequences of an open border, but not her?
Perhaps they, not Banks, know the stories behind the deaths of Laken Riley or, more recently, Sheridan Gorman?
Does she know how many girls and young women have had their sports careers derailed by trans athletes? Was President Harris going to address any of these issues (and not simply make them worse)?
If Banks is going to hurt her own TV show and pretend to speak for women, the very least she could do is a smidge of research.
