Stephen King knows a thing or two about monsters.
The prolific author has given us the stuff of nightmares, from the clownish creature in “It” to superfan Annie Wilkes.
And, sometimes, his inner monster surfaces on social media.
King shared a ghoulish, fact-free assault on the late Charlie Kirk on Thursday. The author claimed Kirk, an avowed Christian, approved of the stoning of gay people.
It’s a lie. And X users let him have it.
They pounded King over and again, with some suggesting the Kirk estate could and should sue him for slander.
Then, something unexpected happened. King apologized. Either he realized he could be in legal jeopardy for his cruel comments, or he found of flicker of humanity and decided to do what’s right.
I apologize for saying Charlie Kirk advocated stoning gays. What he actually demonstrated was how some people cherry-pick Biblical passages.

He also deleted the post in question.
King sent out subsequent messages, reminding his critics that he had apologized. That army of critics included Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican.

King’s ghastly post brought a strong response from several prominent gay pundits, including David Rubin.

Charlie was never anything but kind to me and my husband.
We broke bread many times, and he never treated us with anything other than respect.

King’s message was monstrous on more than one level. Kirk, a married father of two, was killed mere hours ago, and King sought to attack him personally. At least he apologized, even if it wasn’t a full-throated mea culpa.
Other celebrities should do the same. But will they?
TV producer Morgan J. Freeman suggested on X that President Donald Trump may have ordered the assassination of one of his most passionate supporters.
Why? To distract the country from the Epstein scandal.
The mind reels.
Actress Amber Tamblyn also lowered herself by, according to Breitbart News, mocking the fact that Kirk’s daughter witnessed her dad’s assassination.
Celebrities rarely apologize for their social media miscues. A rare example? Rosie O’Donnell erroneously called the monster who killed two children at a Minnesota Christian school a Trump supporter. She later apologized.
