City officials say the shooter is “contained,” and added there is “no active threat to the community.” Law enforcement sources believe the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This elementary and middle school serves students from pre-K through eighth grade. Witnesses described emotional scenes as little kids in uniforms clutched their parents’ hands, leaving the building during what should’ve been a normal start to their first week back.

Governor and Officials React

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz quickly addressed the tragedy on X, writing:

“I’ve been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School” and added, “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also released a statement:

“DHS is monitoring the horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. We are in communication with our interagency partners, and will share more information as soon as it becomes available. I am praying for the victims of this heinous attack and their families.”

President Trump Has Been Briefed:

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, saying he’s been “fully briefed on the tragic shooting.” He continued, “The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!”

The violence has shaken Minneapolis, a city still healing from years of turmoil and tension. Parents who thought they were just dropping their babies off for the first week of school now face unimaginable trauma. Community leaders are already calling for more conversations around safety in schools and how to better protect children.

This is a developing story and we will continue to keep you updated.
