The murder trial of Philadelphia artist PnB Rock began in Los Angeles this week, and it has already encountered significant challenges.
The trial revolves around the fatal shooting of PnB Rock at a Roscoe’s Chicken ‘N Waffles restaurant in South Los Angeles on September 12, 2022. As previously reported, the alleged shooter, a 17-year-old male whose name has been withheld, is believed to have been instructed by his father, Freddie Trone.
In a Los Angeles County courtroom on Friday, the California teen charged with shooting and killing PnB Rock made an appearance. However, the temporary judge overseeing the juvenile case agreed that the teenager was not yet competent to stand trial, Rolling Stone reports. According to prosecutors, the alleged shooter, who was 17 years old at the time, entered the Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles restaurant and fired multiple shots at the rising rapper whose real name is Rakim Allen.
Per the outlet, commissioner Sharonda P. Bradford stated on Friday that the alleged shooter was receiving various services while in custody, but an expert recommendation indicated that he still lacked the necessary competency to participate in a criminal proceeding. “The recommendation is that the previous orders remain,” Commissioner Bradford explained. “The proceedings remain suspended, remediation continues.”
A follow-up hearing has been scheduled for next month.

In the meantime, the father of the alleged shooter, who is 42 years old, has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder, two counts of robbery, and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. Another individual, Tremont Jones, is also a co-defendant in the same trial, Rolling stone notes. He is accused of tipping off Trone and his son about Allen’s whereabouts on the day of the fatal shooting.
PnB Rock, who was at the pinnacle of his career, was tragically gunned down at just 30 years old. He is survived by his daughters, leaving behind a void in the music industry and a legacy that will not be forgotten.
