Tennis legend Serena Williams offered support and shared some valuable advice for Caitlin Clark who continues to be a rising star in the WNBA.

Williams, who can relate to Clark’s experiences as she understands the challenges of being in the spotlight at a young age, weighed on all the Clark controversy while speaking to the Associated Press at the premiere of her docuseries “In the Arena: Serena Williams.”

She began saying, “I just love that she tried to stay grounded and that she doesn’t… look at her social [media]. I get it. I don’t either. And I think it’s so important to continue doing what she’s doing.” Williams, who made her professional tennis debut at the age of 15 and went on to become a tennis icon went on to say, “And no matter what other people do, if people are negative then it’s because they can’t do what you do… basically. And hopefully she’ll continue to do what she’s doing.”

As many are aware by now, Clark’s name has been featured in countless sports headlines throughout the first several weeks of her first season in the WNBA. Why? Well aside from her skills on the court, her transition from college basketball to the professional league has garnered significant attention, both positive and negative.

As some fans have pointed out, her name has been used as “weapon” in non-sports topics–with social media users using her to push their agenda about racism and misogyny. Clark has previously spoken out on this with USA Today and said,

“People should not be using my name to push those agendas. It’s disappointing. It’s not acceptable. Treating every single woman in this league with the same amount of respect, I think it’s just a basic human thing that everybody should do.”

Currently, Clark leads rookies in several categories. She is averaging 15.6 points and six assists over her first 14 WNBA games. As Clark continues to excel in her career, with her determination and resilience, Clark has the potential to leave a lasting impact on the WNBA and inspire generations to come.
