What was excepted to be a normal day on the job for 61-year-old Uber driver Loletha Hall turned into a complete tragedy. The Ohio woman was tragically killed by an 81-year-old man named William Brock after he mistaking believed that she was part of a scam targeting him.
The incident unfolded on March 25 when Brock called the Clark County Sheriff’s Office to report that he had shot a woman. He claimed that he felt threatened by a male caller who mentioned his family, leading him to believe that harm was imminent. “Mr Brock received some scam call by a person purporting to be someone from our courts who informed him a family member was incarcerated and that he had a bond of a significant amount of money,” said Lt Kristopher Shultz of the Clark county sheriff’s office explained in a press release.
Hall, who was working for Uber at the time of the shooting, had driven to Brock’s home to retrieve a package. To note, the scammer who had called Brock had requested an Uber driver through the app. When Hall arrived, Brock accused her of being associated with the scammer. Dash-cam footage from Hall’s car even provides more details of the tragic incident. However, investigations revealed that Hall, who is Black, had absolutely no connection to the alleged scam caller and posed no threat to Brock, who is white. Tragically, Hall succumbed to her injuries after being shot multiple times.
Responding officers found her wounded at Brock’s residence, where he had also sustained injuries. It was confirmed that Hall was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Subsequently, Brock was arrested on April 10 and charged with murder. Despite pleading not guilty, he was held on a $200,000 bond. He posted bond on Wednesday and may face additional charges as police investigate the incident.
