The joyous atmosphere of the Super Bowl parade in Kansas City took a tragic turn when gunshots rang out, leaving 23 people injured and one person dead. Kansas City Police Department Chief Stacey Graves addressed the media this Thursday morning with updates. During a press conference, Graves explained that the incident was not an act of terrorism but rather a dispute that escalated into violence. Chief Graves went on to say that the shooting occurred shortly after speeches by football stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce during a rally at Union Station.

23 individuals were wounded during the chaos. Tragically, 43-year-old Elizabeth Galvan lost her life, and eight others are currently in critical condition. Chief Graves emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest that the shooting was a premeditated attack, but rather a dispute between multiple parties that spiraled out of control. Among the victims, Chief Graves revealed that at least half were under the age of 16, with the youngest being just 8 years old.

The shooting has shaken the Kansas City community to its core, but it has also brought out the best in people. Both Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, along with their respective organizations, expressed their condolences and offered thoughts and prayers for the victims.

“I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me,” Kelce said. Mahomes added, “Praying for Kansas City… 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Law Enforcement Efforts:

In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement authorities have been working diligently to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice. Chief Graves revealed that two individuals detained in connection with the shooting are juveniles, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the dispute. The police department is urging anyone with information to come forward, as the investigation continues.

President Joe Biden has since released a statement saying, “Kansas City.
Atlanta. D.C. Today, six years since Parkland, acts of gun violence cut deep in the American soul. Jill and I pray for those killed and injured today, and for our country to find the resolve to end the senseless epidemic of gun violence tearing us at the seams.”
