OMG! A Pennsylvania couple had to sift through their dog’s poop and vomit after the pup ate $4,000 in cash! They said they were only able to recoup $3,550 and “It smelled so bad!”
Clayton and Carrie Law said their 7-year-old Goldendoodle named Cecil left them in a sticky and smelly situation after eating a bunch of $50 and $100 bills left out on the kitchen counter of their home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The couple said that Cecil decided to eat an envelope of money left on their kitchen countertop last month and were left sifting through Cecil’s bodily waste, including both poop and vomit. The incident began when Clayton woke up to Cecil gagging in the middle of the night. The man ended up walking in on his dog standing over a pile of “mutilated cash.” Turned out, that the dog was struggling to devour the family’s home improvement fund.
Speaking with TODAY, the Pennsylvania couple said they left the envelope on the counter after taking it out for the sake of investing in a new fence. Clayton said, “When you hear that, you immediately just react, so I jumped out of bed and just made sure that he didn’t throw up anywhere. Not great. And then I went to pick it up… and I realized: ‘There’s a lot of, like, half-eaten $100 bills and $50 bills here.'”
Jumping in, Carrie called their dog’s decision “pretty shocking,” claiming Cecil had never been the type of dog to jump on counters. She said the 100-pound dog was never “of interest to…” Clayton added, “It was so out of character that it just didn’t seem real.”
The Pennsylvania couple also said they were able to immediately recover about $1,500, which was less than half the sum they’d withdrawn. They believed their dog swallowed a total of around $2,000 in $50 and $100 bills.
After confirming with their veterinarian about Cecil’s health, they were told at-home monitoring would suffice. During this time, the couple noticed that the dog began to vomit and poop out some of the ingested money, which ultimately left them with no other choice but to sift through their dog’s bodily waste to recover the rest of the missing money.
They said together they would pull out pieces of bills, wash them multiple times, and begin to piece them together like a puzzle. In order for the couple to have their mutilated money exchanged at the bank, they were required to provide more than 50 percent of each bill. Sadly, they weren’t able to retrieve all of the bills that equated to $4,000, but they were able to get a return of $3,550. So they lost about $450.
Carrie said, “There we are at the utility sink, washing this sh*tty money, yelling, ‘Yay! Yes! We got one!’ It smelled so bad.”
Carried told TODAY, “[The bank] said it actually happens quite a bit because money just picks up so many scents, especially if it’s used in the food industry. I guess dogs pick up on that… they have such a good sense of smell… and something about it just drove him crazy.”
