Disney Animation/Kugali original “Iwájú” set to premiere on Disney+ February 28th

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali have collaborated on the new six-part series “Iwájú,” which exclusively streams on Disney+ starting Feb. 28, 2024. Images are now available. While the series premieres on Feb. 28 in the US, release details for select regions, including Nigeria, will be announced soon.

“Iwájú” is an original animated series set in futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, following the coming-of-age story of Tola, a young girl from a wealthy island, and her self-taught tech expert best friend, Kole. Together, they uncover the secrets and dangers hidden in their diverse worlds. Kugali filmmakers, including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, and cultural consultant Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku, guide viewers through the unique world of “Iwájú,” filled with distinct visual elements and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos. The series, produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen with a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson, features voices such as Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia.

Adeola expressed, “Crafting the narrative of ‘Iwájú’ has been a journey of creative alchemy, blending the rich cultural tapestry of Lagos with imaginative leaps into the future. Collaborating with my Kugali co-founders and the visionary artists at Walt Disney Animation Studios has been nothing short of magical.”

Also debuting on Disney+ on Feb. 28 is “Iwájú: A Day Ahead,” a documentary special filmed across three continents. It shares the story of the founders of Kugali, the Pan-African entertainment company, who turned their dream into reality by creating an original animation series with Walt Disney Animation Studios. Produced by the ABC News Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios team behind “Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2,” the documentary illustrates that anything is possible when talent meets opportunity. Directed by Megan Harding, it is executive produced by Amy Astley and Beth Hoppe. Will you be tuning in for this captivating series and documentary?
