On Friday (December 29), USA Boxing announced that they will be allowing transgender women to compete against female boxers in 2024, and transgender men against male boxers. The governing body, which oversees America’s amateur and Olympic-style boxing, wrote the policy in August 2022 and it will appear in the 2024 rulebook.

Under its new “Transgender Policy,” transgender boxers can fight against their biological counterparts, however, they will have to meet “certain requirements” before they’re fully permitted to fight. Included in those requirements are quarterly hormone testing.
For instance, it’s reported that a biological man who identifies as a transgender woman must have undergone gender reassignment surgery and must have a testosterone reading performed and showing less than five nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) for two years before and through competitions.

Additionally, a biological woman who identifies as a transgender man must also be post-op and have a testosterone level of more than ten nmol/L for two years before and through competitions. According to reports, the typical testosterone levels in biological women usually hit a max of about 2.4 nmol/L and about 35 nmol/L for biological men.
It’s reported that these regulations are based on the November 2021 International Olympic Committee Framework on Fairness, Inclusion, and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations. Every two years or so, USA Boxing updates its rule book, and in its latest edition, they have now included this new “Transgender Policy.”
Per the rule book, “The purpose of this policy is to provide fairness and safety for all boxers.” If any transgender boxer is found in violation of the policy, they will be suspended from competing for one year. Furthermore, boxers under the age of 18 must still compete as their birth gender.
USA Boxing’s new policy also arrives as female boxers and martial artists voice their concerns over the past few months about feeling “sincerely scared” to fight transgender women. In October 2023, female martial artists claimed they dropped out of a major competition, citing that they felt “scared” and “unsafe” after being forced to compete against transgender women at previous tournaments.
