The University of Idaho has commenced the demolition of an off-campus house where four students were tragically stabbed to death last year.

The shocking incident, which claimed the lives of Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen, left the university and the surrounding community in a state of profound grief. The house’s owner generously donated the property to the university, which had initially planned to tear it down before the start of the new academic year.

Originally scheduled for demolition in July, the plans were put on hold when attorneys representing the suspect, Bryan Kohberger, requested access to the house as part of their trial preparations. The university granted this request, allowing Kohberger’s legal team to examine the premises. Additionally, prosecutors were granted access to the house on December 21, 2022. These delays pushed back the demolition until this month.

Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the case, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder. Not guilty pleas have been entered on his behalf. Prosecutors have proposed that his trial begin in the summer of 2024, ensuring that a thorough investigation and legal process take place. As the legal proceedings progress, the demolition of the house serves as a symbolic step towards healing and closure for the affected community.

Today’s event which is taking place during winter break – was expected to last several days, the University of Idaho said in a news release this month. But it could be finished within a day, Jodi Walker, university spokesperson Jodi Walker told CNN.

“Sometimes it is hard to see beyond this tragedy,” University of Idaho President Scott added in the February 24 statement. “But the selfless acts, the deep engagement and loving support of our entire Vandal Family reminds me that there is so much good in the world. We will never forget Xana, Ethan, Madison and Kaylee, and I will do everything in my power to protect their dignity and respect their memory.”

University of Idaho President Scott Green previously announced plans for the demolition in February. He said at the time,

“Sometimes it is hard to see beyond this tragedy,” Scott added in the February 24 statement. “But the selfless acts, the deep engagement and loving support of our entire Vandal Family reminds me that there is so much good in the world. We will never forget Xana, Ethan, Madison and Kaylee, and I will do everything in my power to protect their dignity and respect their memory.”

In a new press release, he added,

“It is the grim reminder of the heinous act that took place there. While we appreciate the emotional connection some family members of the victims may have to this house, it is time for its removal and to allow the collective healing of our community to continue.”
