Billie Eilish is confirming that she is indeed a part of the LGBTQ+ community after fans called into question the singer’s sexuality, further noting that she’s been seemingly “queerbaiting” the public with her comments in interviews, etc.

In 2021, after Eilish released the music video for her song “Lost Cause,” fans thought the singer had seemingly come out as LGBTQ+. Without any confirmation, the speculation and “queerbaiting” claims just continued. Months later, she then seemed “annoyed” with fans questioning her sexuality, and asked fans to stop speculating and accusing her of “queerbaiting.”
Although she never addressed the controversy directly, she did comment on it during a September 2021 cover story with Elle Magazine. The singer said she didn’t feel right with the public constantly speculating about her personal life. She noted how people constantly talk about what she does, the way she dresses, “or [even her] sexuality!.” She added, “Like, oh yeah, that’s everyone else’s business, right? No. Where’s that energy with men?”
Laying low until the following year, fans for sure thought she was a part of the LGBTQ+ community when the “Bad Guy” singer admitted in 2022 that her childhood celebrity crush was ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ star Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Although the actress may seem like a pretty normal/common go-to crush for any 90s/2000s kid, fans again thought Billie Eilish had certainly come out in August 2023, when she got candid with her supports during an Instagram Q&A session — following her May 2023 split from her boyfriend of 7 months, Jesse Rutherford. The “What Was I Made For?” singer again left her supporters wondering if she was just “queerbaiting,” or if the manner in which she responded to some of the questions was just her quirky and lackadaisical way of coming out.
While doing her Instagram Q&A, Eilish confirmed that she was single, but “very good friends” with her ex. But it was the next set of questions and answers that left Eilish’s fans lost and confused. As she continued to get a little bit more vulnerable with her fans, the singer chose one fan question to answer.
The user had pleaded with her to “BE HONEST” and to reveal who her then-celebrity crush was. Eilish responded with a photo of actor Ethan Hawke’s daughter, ‘Stranger Things’ star Maya Hawke. Then, another fan asked her a follow-up question that read, “Fruity?” and she jokingly replied with a photo of various fruits — again, leaving fans to believe that she was seemingly coming out as LGBTQ+.

After the August incident, in November 2023, Billie Eilish told Variety, “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”
After leaving fans still unsure, on Saturday (December 2), Variety shared a new red carpet interview clip of Eilish confirming she’s LGBTQ+. She said that she didn’t mean to come out in their cover story the last month, but she said, “No, I didn’t, but I kinda thought, wasn’t it obvious? I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”
She explained that she doesn’t really believe in the labeling part of sexuality and just wants to exist and like who she likes. However, she added that although she didn’t mean to come out, “I saw the article and I was like, ‘Oh! I guess I came out today!’ I was like, ‘Okay, cool.’ But it’s exciting to me, because, I guess people didn’t know. So, it’s cool that they know. But no, I am for the girls.”
