After 22 days of deliberation, the jury at Manchester Crown Court convicted 33-year-old Lucy Letby of killing seven babies and trying to kill six others.

Between 2015 and 2016, Letby harmed babies in her care at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England. She allegedly injected air into their blood and stomachs, and overfed them with milk. In addition to that she would physically assault them and poison the innocent babies with insulin. In one case, Letby murdered a baby boy, who was later identified as Child E. She administered air into his bloodstream. The next day, she attempted to kill his twin brother, Child F, by poisoning him with insulin, the UK’s PA Media news agency reported. Police have refrained from sharing the names of the other young victims.

She was arrested twice in 2018 and 2019 in connection with their investigation, PA said. She was arrested again in November 2020. During an investigation, authorities found notes that she had written at her home. “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them,” she wrote in one memo, adding in another, “I am a horrible evil person” and in capital letters “I am evil I did this,” CNN quotes.

During the lengthy trial, prosecutors said the hospital started to experience a significant rise in the number of babies who were dying or suffering sudden health problems for no apparent reason in 2015. It was noted that some suffered “serious catastrophic collapses” but survived after help from medical staff. Despite an investigation that found the notes, Letby testified for 14 days, proclaiming her innocence. During the trial, the defense argued that she was a “hard-working, dedicated and caring.”

The jury at Manchester Crown Court convicted the baby killer last Friday. She is expected to be sentenced on Monday.

Reacting to the update on the case, prosecutor Pascale Jones said “Parents were exposed to her morbid curiosity and her fake compassion. Too many of them returned home to empty baby rooms. Many surviving children live with permanent consequences of her assaults upon their lives.”

In a joint statement read outside court, the families of the victims also expressed their gratitude to all those who came to give evidence during the trial. They described it as “extremely harrowing and distressing” to listen to.

“To lose a baby is a heart-breaking experience that no parent should ever have to go through, but to lose a baby or to have a baby harmed in these particular circumstances is unimaginable,” they said.
