Vice President Kamala Harris is making it clear that she’s not sitting down with Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis to discuss the states new curriculum where teachers will now teach students that some Black people benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills.
While speaking in Orlando, Florida, at the 20th Women’s Missionary Society of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Quadrennial Convention, Harris slammed the idea of sitting down with DeSantis to discuss the highly controversial topic.
“They attempt to legitimize these unnecessary debates with a proposal that most recently came in of a politically motivated roundtable,” Harris said in the Tuesday speech. “Well, I’m here in Florida, and I will tell you there is no roundtable, no lecture, no invitation we will accept to debate an undeniable fact. There were no redeeming qualities of slavery.” She continued.
DeSantis believes that the Biden administration has misinformed Americans about their plans for the new study.
“[Harris] came to Florida to attack us, and she’s trying to attack me,” DeSantis said Tuesday as he answered a question from Fox News Digital. “But she’s really attacking the people that worked hard on this and have done a lot of yeoman’s work. And so that’s just wrong. I think it’s wrong to let lies be perpetuated. It’s wrong to let false narratives stand.”
Leading Black Republicans, including Sen. Tim Scott and Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, have also called out the notion that enslaved people could benefit from the horrific institution and business of slavery. Scott is also running for the GOP presidential nomination. While Donalds, who was once a close DeSantis ally, previously endorsed Trump.
Harris was responding to DeSantis’ invitation for Harris to discuss the standards with Dr. William Allen, who served on an advisory committee that came up with 215-page standards. The governor’s invitation also took multiple shots at Harris, suggesting his letter to the vice president was little more than a political ploy.
“I am prepared to meet as early as Wednesday of this week, but of course want to be deferential to your busy schedule should you already have a trip to the southern border planned for that day,” DeSantis wrote, he concluded the note by adding “I hope you’re feeling up to it!”
