In December 2022, United States officials reported that the citizenship test was due for an update, as it has been 15 years since the last one. The new version is set to be released late next year.
Now, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has proposed that the new test add on a speaking section to assess the applicant’s English skills. In this instance, an officer would show photos of various, ordinary scenarios, ie: food, weather, daily activities, and then ask the applicant to verbally describe what they are seeing in the photos.
Currently, the tests require an officer to evaluate the applicant’s speaking ability during their naturalization interview, during which an applicant is asked personal questions that they have already answered in their submitted naturalization paperwork.
The naturalization test is one of the final steps in gaining U.S. citizenship, a process that is months-long and requires an applicant to have a legal permanent residency years before applying to become an American citizen.
In 2020, former President Donald Trump and the Trump Administration attempted to change the test, to make it longer and more difficult to pass, but months after President Joe Biden took office, he signed an executive order to eliminate barriers making it harder to gain citizenship. Being so, the test was changed back to its previous version, which was last updated in 2008.

Now of the new test that Biden has proposed, some questions will now have answers given in the form of multiple-choice, versus the applicant needing to recite the answer open-ended. Furthermore, in order to pass the test, the applicant must answer six out of 10 civics questions correctly in order to pass and be granted American citizenship.
The ten questions are pulled from a bank of 100 civics questions, and the applicant will not be told which will be selected. However, they can see and study all 100 questions before they take the test.
