The substitute teacher was identified as Jennifer Hale, who was working at Eustis Middle School, which sits 40 miles northwest of Orlando, Florida.

It is reported that the substitute was teaching at the middle school last week when she overheard a seventh grade student talking about his friend who wanted to try vaping.

After overhearing the children, Hale was accused of pulling out her vape pen and allowing the student to inhale a puff. Officials with the Eustis Police Department add that the substitute teacher then told the students involved not to tell anyone about their alleged little vape session.

However, officials soon learned what happened. According to a police report obtained by news outlets, a student reported the incident and said that a substitute teacher name Jennifer had heard his friend talking about wanting to try a vape. The student claimed the teacher told him, “I have one,” and then pulled it out.

The student then said that the substitute teacher asked if he wanted a hit and told them not to report it. Hale ended up confessing to the school’s principal. She was escorted off campus and told to never return.

The substitute teacher was then arrested and taken into custody at her Mt. Dora home last Friday (May 5). Police also confiscated her vape pen as evidence. Then after officials read her her Miranda rights, she again admitted that she let a student take a hit from her vape. She claimed she did it because she “just wanted to fit in” with the students.

Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri said, “We contacted her she immediately post-Miranda confessed to doing it. Her response was she just wanted to fit in. I don’t get it. What is there to fit in? You’re there to teach a class, not to fit in. She has a responsibility to that classroom to protect kids. Not abuse them.”

According to the Lake County jail records, Hale has since been charged with child abuse, a third-degree felony. Hale’s bond was listed at $1,000, which has since been paid. It is further listed that on May 7 she was released, and is due back in court on May 30.

Meanwhile, a representative for the Lake County School District has not released any detailed statements, but confirmed that the substitute teacher “is no longer employed” at the district.
