A man from Tennessee was reportedly arrested after he ate two bags of chips stolen by another person from a convenience store. According to WREG, the incident unfolded at the Circle K grocery store in Parkway Village, Memphis, earlier this month, when a man had gotten into a dispute with the store’s clerk who had refused to sell him any alcohol.

In retaliation, the man decided to take the entire display case filled with about a hundred bags of chips as he exited the store and made his way to his car.

As he walked to the vehicle, however, the man is said to have dropped several bags on the floor — two of which 36-year-old Joseph Braswell is being accused of stealing and eating, police say.

Per the police report, when cops arrived at the scene, they claim to have caught Braswell with leftover crumbs on him from the chips, so they issued an arrest and charged him with theft of merchandise. Cops revealed that the cost of the two bags of chips that Braswell is accused of eating would have cost around $5.

Law enforcement officials located him just a few feet away from the store and after watching the surveillance footage, it was determined that Braswell would have known that the snacks had been stolen since he was present at the scene as the thief carried the entire case of chips and loaded it into his car.

Braswell spent several days in jail before being released, but his mother has since spoken out about the arrest, saying that she’s been trying to get him assessed by a psychiatrist for a while, indicating Braswell may be suffering from mental health issues.

“I try to get him assessed and every time he goes downtown for something like this, they never assess him,” she told a local Memphis news station in response to her son’s arrest for eating two bags of stolen chips.

His mother also seems to be aware that this is not the first time Braswell has found himself in trouble with the law, with his arrest record revealing he’s had run-ins with the cops on several occasions in the past.

Some of his previous crimes are said to have included driving without a license, probation violations, and domestic assault incidents. As for the man who initially stole the display case of chips from the store, police are still trying to locate his whereabouts.
