Mikayla Thornton, the youngest daughter of Color Me Badd (“I Wanna Sex You Up”) singer Kevin Thornton, is accusing her father of being in a cult and subjecting her to religious abuse, subjecting to her childhood sexual abuse, and much more.
In a recent interview with Soft White Underbelly, Mikayla alleged her father created a “rod of correction” bearing Bible verses and his children’s names that was used to beat them. She said, “We grew up in a very religious household.” She continued to allege her father subjected her and her siblings to religious “deliverances.”
Mikayla explained they were allegedly struck with a Bible hard enough to leave bruises. She said she believed the treatment during her childhood was normal and that other families had similar experiences. Mikayla further alleged that the alleged abuse continued until she and her siblings cried and begged for it to stop.

Now, Mikayla’s allegations vastly differ from her father Kevin Thornton’s previous public claims. After Color Me Badd’s 1990s success, he left the group in 1998 to pursue religion. After pursuing Christian ministry, he eventually became a licensed minister.
In 2009, Kevin told Cross Rhythms that walked away from secular music because he believed God called on him. He said, “I’m looking to make a career of spreading the Gospel of Jesus with the gifts that he has given me.”
Despite her father’s public comments, Mikayala alleges he used religion inside their home as control. She said, “It was a cult. My dad was the head. We were his disciples.” Additionally, Mikayla alleged he wanted his children to idolize him and be fearful of going against him and religion.
