Illinois Sues President Trump Over National Guard Deployment

Whew! Socialites, come get into this! Illinois has gone ahead and filed a suit this Monday to stop the Trump administration from putting boots on Chicago streets, aiming to block the use of federalized National Guard troops without the state’s blessing.

Straight out the gate, the filing stated:
“The American people, regardless of where they reside, should not live under the threat of occupation by the United States military, particularly not simply because their city or state leadership has fallen out of a president’s favor,” wrote the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

The lawsuit, which names former President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, accuses the administration of power-tripping and violating the Constitution by trying to force federal military presence into cities like Chicago.

“The Trump administration’s illegal actions already have subjected and are subjecting Illinois to serious and irreparable harm,” the suit continues.

Chicago and Portland have become political punching bags in recent years. Democrat-led cities painted by Trump as out of control and in need of “law and order.” But Illinois isn’t having it. The lawsuit echoes arguments made in Oregon, where a federal judge already stepped in to block Trump from sending troops into Portland from other states.

Illinois is building its case on similar constitutional ground. The heart of the issue is the Tenth Amendment, which protects state sovereignty. The lawsuit calls out the administration for abusing power under the guise of protecting federal property from so-called “violent demonstrations.”

“The Federalization Order’s deployment of federalized military forces to protect federal personnel and property from ‘violent demonstrations’ that ‘are occurring or are likely to occur’ represents the exact type of intrusion on State power that is at the heart of the Tenth Amendment,” it says.

Beyond the legal jargon, Illinois argues this move could tear up communities already on edge. The filing warns of further mistrust between police and the people, more unrest in the streets, and even economic backlash.

“The deployment of federalized National Guard, including from another state, infringes on Illinois’s sovereignty and right to self-governance. It will cause only more unrest, including harming social fabric and community relations and increasing the mistrust of police. It also creates economic harm, depressing business activities and tourism that not only hurt Illinoisians but also hurt Illinois’s tax revenue,” the lawsuit explains.

In short, Illinois is saying: don’t turn our city into a battlefield just to make a political point.

The city and the state are pushing for a court ruling to declare the Trump administration’s actions “unconstitutional and/or unlawful,” seeking to block any deployment of the U.S. military, any National Guard troops, and especially federalized forces from out of state.

Trump has not yet commented on this latest filing. Until now, the message from Illinois is clear: this is our home, not your warzone.
