Nick Cannon is getting real about his personal life in a new a sit-down interview on The Breakfast Club. The Wild ’N Out creator opened up about fatherhood and admitted that having so many kids was ultimately tied to his trauma.

Now, Cannon has given different explanations in the past about why he decided to have so many children, sometimes even cracking jokes about it. But this time, the 44-year-old made it clear his choices were connected to a few things including coping with pain after his 2016 divorce from Mariah Carey.

Cannon told the hosts,

“It wasn’t like I was acting out. It was more of being careless, being frivolous with my process because I could do it because I had the money.”

He continued,

“Because I had the the access to whoever and however I wanted to move and you know… okay, they coming at me, they asking me opposed to like doing a mature thing and saying, hey, well, it probably makes more sense to do this and then obviously life happens as well.”

Cannon didn’t shy away from admitting that if he had given himself time to heal properly, things could have looked different. The TV host explained that rushing through his healing process after splitting with Mariah Carey had long-lasting effects.

He shared,

“If I would have thought the process through a little bit more and took time to actually do the inner work, things might have been a little different in certain scenarios.”

Even though he can’t turn back time, Cannon made it clear he stands tall as a proud father. Every one of his children was born out of love.

“Every child that I had was made out of love and there were strong relationships.”

Nick Cannon On Therapy And Breaking Cycles For His Kids

Cannon also made it clear that his kids won’t just repeat the same choices he made. He’s a strong advocate for therapy and doesn’t hide that fact.

He revealed that his kids even attend sessions with him:

“Because there they have to understand that this is an unorthodox, non-traditional scenario and I want them to be in the healthiest space as possible.”

Cannon finished by showing gratitude to those who have helped him along the way.

“Shouts out to all my therapists.”

Nick Cannon has 12 children with six women. His oldest are twins Monroe and Moroccan with Mariah Carey. He shares Golden, Powerful Queen, and Rise Messiah with Brittany Bell. With Abby De La Rosa, he has twins Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir, plus daughter Beautiful Zeppelin. He welcomed Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi and daughter Onyx Ice Cole with LaNisha Cole. With Alyssa Scott, he had son Zen, who tragically passed away at 5 months, and later daughter Halo Marie.
