Louisiana Girl, 5, Praised as Hero After Helping Blind Grandmother Escape House Fire

A five-year-old girl from Louisiana is being celebrated as a hero after saving her blind grandmother from a house fire.

Chloe Woods jumped into action last Wednesday when her family’s fire alarm went off, using lessons she had learned just weeks earlier during a fire safety trip to the Kenner Fire Department.

How Chloe Saved Her Grandmother

When the alarm sounded, Chloe immediately remembered her fire safety lessons. She told her grandmother to hold onto her shoulder, and together they made their way out of the burning home.

Her mother, Shone Arceneaux, told THV11: “She told her grandmother to hold on to her shoulder and that they needed to get out of the house.” Their family dog also managed to escape alongside them, according to WREG. Once outside, Chloe ran to a neighbor’s house, asked for water, and instructed them to call 911.

Fire Chief John Hellmers applauded Chloe’s quick thinking and courage. In a statement, he said the young girl “saved her grandmother’s life and her own life.”

Officials emphasized how her recent fire safety class likely played a huge role in her ability to respond so quickly under pressure.

The department says her story shows the importance of educating children about fire safety at an early age.
