Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green announced on Wednesday that he’s gearing up to introduce articles of impeachment against President Trump. This move comes after Trump floated the idea of the U.S. taking control of Gaza.
“The movement to impeach the president has begun,” Green said on the House floor. “I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.” As we previously shared, On Tuesday, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump tossed around the notion of the U.S. stepping in to take control of the Gaza Strip. He suggested that Americans should take the lead in cleaning up and rebuilding the war-ravaged area.
Democrats, including Green, came down hard on the president for his comments, labeling the takeover suggestion as “ethnic cleansing.” They compared it to tossing a match into an already explosive situation, emphasizing how reckless and dangerous such ideas can be.
“Ethnic cleansing is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world, when he has the ability to perfect what he says, ethnic cleansing in Gaza is no joke, and the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed knowing the history of his people,” Green said.
Green condemned Trump’s remarks, reminding everyone that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was spot on when he said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” He stressed the importance of standing up against injustice, no matter where it happens.
“Injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America,” he said. Green was one of the key players behind Trump’s first impeachment back in 2017. On Wednesday, he stated that he “laid the groundwork for impeachment” and is ready to step up and do it again.
“I know that it’s time for us to lay the foundation again. On some issues, it is better to stand alone than not stand at all,” he said. “On this issue, I stand alone, but I stand for justice.”
