Former New York Giants star turned “NFL on Fox” analyst Michael Strahan has found himself making headlines but not for his great on-air skills or heartwarming family clips. This time it’s over a moment that many viewers deemed disrespectful during a recent Veterans Day broadcast from Naval Base San Diego.
As the national anthem played, the cameras panned across the Fox crew, capturing a sweet scene of solidarity as they stood with their hands over their hearts. But there was Strahan, standing next to Rob Gronkowski, with his hands in front of him, a posture that some viewers interpreted as a sign of disrespect—especially on a day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served in the military.
Many took to social media to voice their discontent and question Strahan’s patriotism just one day before Veterans Day. One person wrote, “Michael Strahan disrespected the military during a Veterans Day pre-game show on @NFLonFOX. The great irony is Strahan on a ship surrounded by men and women who would willingly sacrifice their lives to protect his freedom. So, his behavior is not just repugnant, it’s downright cowardly.” Another said, “I served 20 years defending your sorry ass allowing you to be an idiot. You’re welcome. Happy Veteran’s Day, a**wipe.” W third said, “Fire Michael Strahan! This is unacceptable!”
Other social media users were quick to defend him. “Michael Strahan’s dad served in the Army for 23 years. He grew up on a US Army base in Germany and has given a ton of money to veteran charities. He’s standing quietly at attention. We need to stop getting so upset at every little thing,” a fan added. Another annoyed fan wrote, “People that supported a criminal and rapist want to even open their lips to talk about Michael Strahan not putting his hand over his heart…” A third Strahan fan also said,
“I don’t put my hand over my heart either..hell I don’t even sing the shit. Like many others i just stand there until it’s over. MAGA Trumpies just looking for anything. Leave Michael Strahan the hell alone.”
Despite the backlash, Strahan has remained largely silent on the issue. Instead, he took time to acknowledge Veterans Day on his Instagram account while honoring a his late father. He wrote,
“Thank vou to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day. Your selfless service is beyond measure. This is my hero, it is also my father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr.
He continued, “He served for 23 ears in the army and was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank You.”
