As we get closer to Halloween you might be in the market for a scary double feature.
No problem. I’ve got you covered.
From Darkness to Light…
- “The Descent” — A group of female friends go spelunking in the back of their BF’s sock drawer and it slowly leads to madness… okay, it’s not a sock drawer. It’s a cave in the South but things do get scary.
- “As Above, So Below” — A group of friends go exploring in the catacombs underneath Paris and find more than the discarded Paris Treaty. It’s more like the Gates of Hell.
Bad Vacations…
- “Midsommar” — Friends sets off for a fun vacation in Sweden and make the mistake of trying to blend into a culture they don’t understand.
- “The Blair Witch Project” — A curious trio set off to find a famous witch and find her, but it’s not nearly as fun as they had hoped.
Wrong Room…
- “1BR” — Good apartments are hard to find in LA. What’s a few weird neighbors when you’ve got hardwood floors?
- “Hostel 2” — Parts of Eastern Europe gives many people the creeps and for good reason. Hostels are where a lot of shady deals go down. Fortunately, one plucky backpacker turns the tables on would-be kidnappers.
Samara Weaving. ’nuff Said…
- “The Babysitter” — Yeah, she’s super hot in this.
- “Ready or Not” — And this as well.
Let’s Band Together…
- “Fear the Night” — Ex-badass takes on a bunch of California rednecks during a bachelorette party. There is a stripper but it doesn’t go well for him nor for most of the partiers. The bold few do join forces to survive the night.
- “Attack the Block” — Aliens in the ‘hood… you don’t mess with the ‘hood.
Ethical Horror…
- “Drag Me to Hell” — The lesson? A little bit of kindness goes a long way.
- “It Follows” — The ethical implications are profound. Every teen should watch this right after their sex-ed class on STIs.
Party Fouls…
- “Talk to Me” — There was always that one kid at any party…
- “Bodies Bodies Bodies” — I think most parents know that a house full of teens or twentysomethings can only lead to trouble.
Bad Ass Women…
- “Bruja” — It was a heck of an interview process, but she got the job.
- “The Witch” — “Wouldst Thou Like To Live Deliciously?” asked Black Phillip.
Humorous Failed Attempts to Summon Satan…
- “Satanic Panic” — Pizza delivery girl’s first night on the job doesn’t go as planned. PS — she’s a virgin.
- “Jennifer’s Body” — High school girl becomes a sacrifice to a band looking for their big break. P.S. — she’s not a virgin.
Women Slowly Losing It…
- “The Love Witch” — She’s had enough of the dating apps and is ready to meet a nice man even if it kills him.
- “Antichrist” — A good metaphor for the process of therapy.
The Thinking Person’s Horror…
- “The Cube” — Helps if you understand prime factorization and geometry.
- “Coherence” — Helps if you understand the Many Worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics.
The Scary Movies Only The Cool Kids Know…
- “Tigers Are Not Afraid” — “The Goonies” set in Mexico within the drug cartels.
- “The Other” — No, not the movie “The Others” with Nicole Kidman. This is about ancient European magic and warging before “Game of Thrones.” This kid is super-super creepy.
I hope you have a fun and safe Halloween!
