During a news conference police announced that the individuals arrested are reportedly affiliated with opposing Jacksonville gang rivals that collaborated to orchestrate and execute the homicide in Tampa. Prior to the incident, Jones had shared his whereabouts online on numerous occasions. It is suspected that the perpetrators trailed him from various locations before ambushing his vehicle at the Holiday Inn and carrying out the attack, according to WFLA.

Law enforcement presented video surveillance footage during the conference, revealing five individuals dressed in all black carrying guns around the hotel in the early morning of the shooting. The footage captured the assailants targeting Jones, opening fire on the car in which Jones was a passenger, and continuing to shoot as the vehicle attempted to flee the scene.
