Marquis White, the Maryland middle school Science teacher who went viral upon being placed under investigation for allowing his female students to take down his braids, is set to return to work after being cleared of any wrongdoing.
On May 5, the Maryland teacher took to his social media and shared a video of him sitting at his desk while surrounded by several female students who were unbraiding his hair. The viral video caused tons of controversy and debates about whether the teacher’s actions were inappropriate or just him giving his students, whose work he confirmed done for the day, a safe place to explore their creativity and be themselves.
Several people who took to social media to react was rapper Cardi B, who took up for the teacher and said he “should not be fired” as everyone could see he was a genuine person and cherished figure in the school community.
Defending the Maryland teacher for allowing his students to take down his braids, Cardi B, who has a young daughter and a young son with rapper husband Offset, went live on Instagram and said, “Since I have a daughter, I wouldn’t want to see my daughter be around no men, period. Your perspective in everything, when it comes to girls, changes when you have an actual daughter. I don’t think he should get fired because, you know what, we’re lacking teachers right now.”
Cardi added, “You can tell that the girls really like their teacher, so that means their classmates like their teacher. When you like your teacher, it makes you want to pay attention more in class and it makes you want to do better in class,” the musician continued. “He probably has a good relationship with his students.”

Two months later, on July 5, the Maryland teacher took to his social media channels again and not only thanked Cardi B for taking up for him upon being placed under investigation, but he also shared that he has since been cleared of any wrongdoing after having his students take out his braids. In the video, White said he was initially upset at how “long, extensive, and arduous” the investigation took, but he eventually was very thankful that officials took their time and ensured that he wasn’t “an actual weirdo that slipped through the cracks.”
White also thanked his local school community, his students’ parents, and the people online “who were more outraged” than his students’ parents. White continued to admit that he made a mistake by uploading videos of his students on his personal social media pages, despite “having parents’ approval” to their students featured in his videos. He explained that the school district is against such behavior and he is being placed on a 5-day suspension without pay.
White said, “It’s understandable. I’m not fired. I was never fired. I never lost my job. The County came out and said I was reassigned. I was just reassigned to my house. I couldn’t go to the school because they had to investigate the things that people were saying about me. I was just at home on administrative leave.” He added, “I’ll be back at the school in August, doing what I do best: making learning fun and impacting the lives of countless students.”
