In a significant move to address the ongoing homelessness crisis in California, Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order for the removal of homeless encampments across the state this Thursday. This decision comes in the wake of a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which allows cities to enforce bans on sleeping outside in public spaces.

Governor Newsom’s order provides an outline to state agencies on how to effectively remove the thousands of tents and makeshift shelters that currently line freeways, clutter shopping center parking lots, and occupy city parks. However, it is important to note that the decision to remove these encampments ultimately remains in the hands of local authorities.

Taking to Twitter, Governor Newsom stated, “No more excuses. We’ve provided the time. We’ve provided the funds. Now it’s time for locals to do their job.”

The Supreme Court case, which is considered one of the most significant on the issue in decades, has sparked a nationwide debate on how to tackle the rising number of individuals without permanent housing. Cities across the country have been dealing with the politically complex issue, as public frustration over related health and safety concerns continues to mount.

Homelessness has become a signature issue for Governor Newsom since taking office. Earlier this year, he campaigned for a ballot measure that would allow the state to borrow nearly $6.4 billion to construct 4,350 housing units. The timing of this order coincides with increased criticism from Republicans towards California and its handling of the homelessness crisis.

Vice President Kamala Harris, a former California district attorney, attorney general, and senator, recently launched her presidential campaign. As she enters the race, Republicans have seized the opportunity to highlight the state’s challenges with homelessness.

Effectively balancing compassion for homeless individuals with the need to enforce laws and regulations can be challenging for cities. However, there are several approaches that can help achieve this balance. But while Governor Newsom believes his latest executive order is this the most strategic move to start addressing the homelessness crisis in California, organizations and groups strongly disagree.
