A man in Taichung, Taiwan, experienced an alarming situation that led him to seek urgent medical attention. The individual, who was taking a shower when he first noticed the issue, was horrified to find pieces of what appeared to be hardened dirt falling from his genitals into the drain. Mistaking them for kidney stones, he promptly consulted urologist Dr. Chen Zhaoan for a professional evaluation.

During an examination, the Director of the Zhaoan Urology Clinic, Dr. Chen, found a concerning buildup of smegma, a yellow-brown substance created from a combination of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. The accumulation had become calcified over time and emitted a foul odor when cleaned, revealing the extent of neglect the patient’s genitals had suffered. The most shocking part of the discovery was that the buildup had been accumulating for approximately 30 years, hardening into a solid mass that broke apart like stone. This situation was made more complicated by the fact that the patient had an unusually long foreskin, which he was unable to retract, likely contributing to the accumulation, the Daily Mail reported.
Dr. Chen noted that a lack of foreskin retraction had resulted in the glans not being exposed or cleaned, leading to an excessive buildup of smegma. He commented that such severe cases were rare, occurring only about once every two years. Dr. Chen emphasized the importance of regular genital hygiene, advising men to clean their penis and foreskin daily with water and mild soap during their shower routine.

This basic practice can prevent the accumulation of substances that could lead to discomfort, infection, or in extreme cases, situations as unpleasant as the one described. Furthermore, Dr. Chen highlighted the abundance of online health information and the high accessibility of medical resources in Taiwan.
“There is currently enough health information in school education and on the Internet, and the accessibility of medical resources in Taiwan is also very high. If you really have a problem that you don’t understand, it is recommended to seek medical advice from a specialist.”
He encouraged individuals to seek medical advice from specialists if they encounter problems or have questions about their health, emphasizing that no concern is too minor regarding personal well-being. This unusual case serves as a vivid reminder of the importance of personal hygiene and the need for open conversations about health care and body maintenance. It illustrates how neglect in these areas can lead to significant and potentially embarrassing health issues, underscoring the value of education and awareness in preventing such situations.
