In Lifetime’s revealing two-part documentary titled “Where Is Wendy Williams?” The former talk show host’s son, Kevin Hunter Jr., talked more about his mother’s heartbreaking dementia diagnosis. The 23-year-old disclosed that doctors believe his mother’s frontotemporal dementia is alcohol-induced, shedding light on a previously undisclosed aspect her health struggles.
According to Kevin Hunter Jr., he was told by doctors that Wendy Williams’ excessive alcohol consumption had a detrimental impact on her brain and headspace. He shared that medical professionals explained how her heavy drinking had started to affect her cognitive functions, leading to what they termed as alcohol-induced dementia.
“I was able to really learn more about things going on with my mother internally,” the Kevin Jr. shared in Sunday’s episode. “[Doctors] basically said that because she was drinking so much, it was starting to affect her headspace and her brain. So, I think they said it was alcohol-induced dementia.”
This revelation provides a new perspective on Williams’ health journey and the factors contributing to her current condition.

Wendy Williams first became aware of her brain damage during a stint in a Florida rehab facility in 2019. However, it wasn’t until 2023 that she received the official diagnosis of dementia and aphasia. The delayed diagnosis highlights the complexities of identifying and understanding cognitive disorders, especially in cases where underlying causes like alcoholism may be at play.
Adding to the narrative, Williams’ niece, Alex Finnie, shared her experience of learning about her aunt’s diagnosis in 2022. She recounted noticing signs of cognitive decline in Williams, such as memory lapses and difficulty recalling details, prior to the formal diagnosis. This insight from family members paints a picture of the challenges Williams has faced on her journey towards understanding and managing her condition.
Wendy, who also suggests from Graves’ disease has since released a statement of her own to address her latest diagnosis. She said,
“I want to say I have immense gratitude for the love and kind words I have received after sharing my diagnosis of Aphasia and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD),” Wendy began. “Let me say, wow! Your response has been overwhelming. The messages shared with me have touched me, reminding me of the power of unity and the need for compassion.”
“I hope that others with FTD may benefit from my story. I want to also thank the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration for their kind words of support and their extraordinary efforts to raise awareness of FTD,” Williams added. “I continue to need personal space and peace to thrive. Please just know that your positivity and encouragement are deeply appreciated.”
