The Critics Choice Awards is an event that celebrates the best in film and television. However, not every moment was met with laughter and applause. Ariana DeBose, the talented Oscar-winning actress and Broadway star, recently found herself at the center of a joke that didn’t sit well with her.

During the ceremony, presenters Bella Ramsey and Anthony Ramos made a little jokey joke that left DeBose unamused. As the two presented the category for Best Song, they took a playful swipe at actors who also dabble in singing. Ramsey mentioned DeBose’s name alongside Jack Black and Ryan Gosling, implying that they were actors who believed they were singers. “Then there are the actors who think they’re singers: Jack Black, Ariana DeBose, and Ken himself, Ryan Gosling,” the 20-year-old continued. Cameras captured DeBose’s expression, which clearly showed her displeasure with the comment.

Taking to Instagram, DeBose shared her thoughts on the joke made at the Critics Choice Awards. She expressed her lack of amusement, writing, “No, I didn’t find it funny. Lol.” While her response was brief, it’s clear it really bothered her.

Ariana DeBose is no stranger to the world of musicals. With an impressive resume that includes performances in Broadway hits like “Hamilton” and “Pippin,” she has proven her talent as both an actress and a singer. Her breakthrough role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” earned her critical acclaim, and she went on to win both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance. It is evident that DeBose has worked hard to establish herself as a respected artist in the industry.

Aside from success, she’s also no stranger to making headlines.

DeBose went viral after she opened the 2023 BAFTA awards ceremony by performing “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” and “We Are Family” before launching into a rap that celebrated female nominees and featured the unforgettable line, “Angela Bassett did the thing.”

The video which people saw as hilarious and cringy sparked a reaction out of her. At the time she said, “The internet is wild y’all!” she captioned the post but added,”Appreciate all the love.”

Many people came to her defense including show producer Nick Bullen. He previously told Variety, “I think it’s incredibly unfair, to be frank,” Bullen told Variety. “That rap section in the middle, mentioning the women in the room, was because it’s been a great year for women in film, and we wanted to celebrate that. And here is a woman of color who is at the absolute top of her game. And she’s opening the BAFTAs with a song that said so much on so many levels.”

While this seems like another unfortunate viral moment, we’re sure it’s not going to stop her from doing what she loves which is entertainer her fans.
