In a recent interview on Jay Shetty’s podcast, former First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about her apprehensions regarding the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Expressing her fears for the future, Obama highlighted several global issues that keep her up at night. From the ongoing wars to the potential impact of artificial intelligence, education and climate change, she shared her concerns with the world.

Michelle Obama acknowledged that her worries were not centered around herself but rather the state of the world. Having been privy to an abundance of information during her time in the White House, she discussed the burden of knowing too much. As the spouse of a president who was well-informed about global affairs, she expressed the desire to sometimes disconnect from the constant influx of information.

While speaking with Shetty, Mrs Obama explained that “There’s such a thing as knowing too much and when you’ve been married to the president of the United States who knows everything about everything in the world — sometimes you just wanna turn it off,” Obama, 59, said. “What keeps me up are the things that I know.”

Speaking of AI, climate change, and the election, she continued saying, “Those are the things that keep me up because you don’t have control over them and you wonder where are we in this, where are our hearts? What’s gonna happen in this next election?” Obama said on the podcast.

During the interview, Mrs. Obama also expressed her worries about voter participation. She questioned why some people choose not to exercise their right to vote, emphasizing the importance of every citizen’s voice in shaping the future. Her concern reflects a broader desire for increased civic engagement and the need for individuals to actively participate in the democratic process.

“I am terrified about what could possibly happen because our leaders matter, who we select, who speaks for us, who holds that bully pulpit. It affects us in ways that I think sometimes people take for granted,” she continued.

“The fact that people think that government — ‘eh, does it really even do anything?’ — and I’m like ‘Oh my God, does government do everything for us, and we cannot take this democracy for granted.’ And I worry sometimes that we do. Those are the things that keep me up,” she said. “We cannot take this democracy for granted and sometimes I worry that we do,” Obama added. “Those are the things that keep me up.”
