This Holiday season Netflix’s and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Part One: A Child Of Fire drops and brings you to a whole new realm. When deciding if a film is successful it ultimately comes down to if it entertains and whether you are able to leave your life behind and immerse yourself into the onscreen story for the duration of the movie, and if you leave still thinking about it, then that’s a plus.

The first installment of Rebel Moon does just that, you immediately forget about what you have going on and get invested into the story on screen. Arguably some note that it can be cross of Star Wars and Seven Samurai, but the film’s creativity stands on its own, after all it is coming from the genius behind 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel and Justice League and more.

Once again Snyder takes us on cinematic rollercoaster through the stars, showcasing his signature visuals. It immerses you in a space-age experience with a whole new world of characters, and what is beautiful about it, is there is no limit, from Hermada a spider-like alien portrayed by Jena Malone, King Levitica to the magnificent Bennus a griffin-like, rideable beast native to Tarak’s home world. Imagine all the things you loved in films such as Harry Potter, Pirates’s Of The Caribbean, Star Wars. Those elements are present but created with Snyder’s own unique creativity that merges all these different world’s together paving way for a much larger future of Rebel Moon.

Snyder, co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, based on an original story conceived by Snyder. The movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Ed Skrein, and Anthony Hopkins. Each character has their own battles and mystery behind them, leaving us wanting more on screen time with them to know what shaped them. We learn details as the story goes on, but judging by the ending of Part 1 there is still a lot to learn.

Part One: Child of Fire sees the corrupt Motherworld government threaten the moon of Veldt with its dictator like forces led by Regent Balisarius, who sends down Noble (played by Skrein) to unleash pain and destruction upon those whom they can take advantage of. Kora, a once-affiliated member of the Imperium, driven by a desire for redemption from her involvement in the oppressive regime, takes on the mission of assembling warriors from diverse corners of the galaxy. Their purpose is to unite and stand against the impending return of the Motherworld’s forces to the planet and form a resistance that can take them down once and for all.

It has everything you want, a villain, or villains that never seem to die no matter how hard you go at them, a group of diverse protagonists with different skillsets to fill in each other weaknesses and amplify each other strengths, and a good variety of action-packed fights scenes. Snyder’s fan-favorite storytelling is frequently the fight scenes he implements, and Rebel Moon does not fail to meet expectations. Snyder impressively employs slow-motion to enhance the scene’s tension, often marking the beginning of meticulously choreographed duels that leave a lasting impact. Additionally, his strategic and innovative approach involves filming certain parts of the camera shots in-focus and others out-of-focus, contributing to the bold nature of this production. His approach once again brings a visuals pleasing film to life for audiences.

It is also precendee to remember that the premise of Part 1 is purely to introduce us to the world of Rebel Moon, the characters, the objective and cause they are fighting for. It is clear Snyder has laid out the skeleton for Part 2 which will show us the true excellence of this realm, and hopefully a bigger future for the Rebel Moon franchise.
