It’s that time of year again! PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive has been revealed and this time it’s going to actor Patrick Dempsey!
The beloved entertainer who’s best known for his heartthrob character as neurosurgeon Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, said he couldn’t believe it when he first received the news. “I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing, like, this is a joke, right? I’ve always been the bridesmaid!” he joked. “I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good,” he told PEOPLE.
The 57-year-old went on to say, “I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life. It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly, my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”
So how will kids react to his new title? He tells the outlet that they’re “just going to make fun of me and pick on me and figure out every reason why I shouldn’t be,” he says. “Which is good, they keep me young.”

Other Sexiest Man Alive recipients include Michael B. Jordan, John Legend, Paul Rudd, Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, and Mel Gibson, who was the magazine’s first recipient in 1985.
So how are social media users reacting? Well according to the folks on Twitter, they seem to be here for PEOPLE’s pick. One user said, “I’m not mad at this. he’s been handsome my whole life.” Another added, “They took way too long actually.” A third said, “Okay wasn’t expecting this but valid.”
PEOPLE has been honoring Hollywood’s best-looking men since 1985. Mel Gibson, who was the magazine’s first recipient in 1985. Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt followed after.
In recent years, other Sexiest Man Alive recipients were Michael B. Jordan, John Legend, and Paul Rudd.
