Reporting hard news is not an easy job and CNN’s Clarissa Ward just gave us a clear example of just how difficult and dangerous it could really be.
In a heart-stopping moment, Ward and her crew found themselves in the midst of danger while reporting from the frontlines in Israel. As they were covering a recent Hamas attack near a border crossing between Israel and Gaza, they suddenly had to take immediate action to protect themselves.
With rockets flying overhead, Ward and her team demonstrated incredible bravery as they swiftly dove into a nearby ditch to avoid the incoming artillery. This harrowing experience highlights the dedication and commitment of journalists who risk their lives to bring us real-time updates from conflict zones.
While catching her breath, Ward told viewers during her live coverage, “Forgive me. I have a slightly inelegant position, but we have just had a massive barrage of rockets coming in here, not too far from us. So we have had to take shelter here by the roadside,” she explained while breathing heavily on the broadcast while lying on her side on the ground. “We’re just about five minutes away. Gaza is in that direction. We can hear now a lot of jets in the sky. We can also hear the Iron Dome intercepting a number of those rockets as they were whizzing overhead and making impact in that direction, not too far from here.”
She continued to say that the area she was reporting from was “Ground Zero for this entire operation of carnage” that broken out in Gaza over Saturday morning. “Hamas militants came on a pickup truck. This was the first place where they breached that border wall, and they basically drove down this strip, just spraying lead wherever they went,” she said.
As frightening as that may have been, CNN’s Ward and Anderson Cooper have continued to report from the ground in Israel as night falls near the Gaza border.

More On The Intense Battle
Following the weekend surprise by Hamas, Israel has declared war on the Palestinian militant group after it carried out an unprecedented attack by air, sea, and land on Saturday. The assault has left at least 900 dead in Israel, prompting retaliation by Israel with airstrikes on Gaza that killed at least 560 people.
As of Monday morning, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant ordered a “complete siege” on Gaza. This action comes as a response to the horrific attack carried out by Hamas fighters, who infiltrated southern Israeli towns in a surprise weekend attack. To ensure the safety and security of its citizens, the Israeli authorities have taken measures such as cutting electricity and blocking the entry of food and fuel.
Infrastructure Minister Israel Katz also ordered an immediate cutoff of Israel’s water supplies to Hamas-run Gaza, saying “What was in the past, will no longer be in the future.”
While the Israeli military said fighting in border towns has largely died down…for now, they will continue to fight Hamas in “seven to eight” places in southern Israel.
Hamas has claimed that these attacks are in retaliation for Israel’s escalated aggression in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
