It looks like Jason Derulo will soon be dancing his way to court as he’s facing a big lawsuit that details some shocking claims. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Emaza Gibson details how Derulo promised her a record deal but allegedly expected sex in return.
While speaking with the news outlet, Emaza shared that it all began in 2021 when he allegedly reached out to help her secure a music deal. Now, the move is not unusual as many people scout for new talent on social media, and with the former Cerradi group member having a big online presence on many platforms including Instagram and YouTube, it’s clear why she may have grabbed Derulo’s attention.
However, as the years went on, Emaza was looking forward to professional conversations and meetings but realized it was less of that and more of the unexpected. She says they started to work together to create music to present to label executives so they would sign off on her deal. Emaza states in the lawsuit that during that time, Derulo would often invite her to late dinners but she declined in order to keep their relationship professional. She also alleged that he later began inviting her to drink during their studio sessions, according to the suit. Although she was very adamant about not drinking so she could stay aware of her vocal condition and performance, she agreed one time to have drinks with him in the studio and was given “inappropriately large amounts of alcohol,” the suit says. Emaza says she took a sip and told him it was too strong. “I told him that I wasn’t a drinker … so it’s like, you know, you’re not listening to that the first time I tell you, and you’re still pushing on me,” Emaza said in the NBC News interview. “It’s, like, pressure at this point.”

From there, she noticed things started to go downhill. In November 2021, she claims she told Derulo that she was not willing to go against her own morals just to have a successful career. However, the suit alleges Derulo responded by telling her she might have to take part in “goat skin and fish scales.”
While Emaza says she was aware that meant “fish scales” meant a strain of cocaine she didn’t know what Derulo meant by doing “goat skin.” However, after researching online she learned that it involved rituals involving sex, goat sacrifices, and blood…The lawsuit states that Emaza considered Derulo’s statement an “explicit demand for sex-in-exchange-for-success.” To make matters worse, pointed out other strange behavior, such as repeated pressure to go out with him and the scheduling of late-night studio sessions, the news site notes.
Emaza mentions a time when she traveled to New York to finally meet with executives to showcase her music and finalize her deal. But unfortunately ran into more problems. She claims just minutes before their big meeting Derulo allegedly told her that a woman named Rosa would be coming along.
At some point, while alone, Emaza said the girl even made the strange comment that Derulo was on “some f— shit,” implying that Derulo invited her to have sex with her. Despite that, Derulo showcased the music the woman had prepared and recorded, the lawsuit states. It was in that moment Emaza realized that the woman made made progress in her career simply because “you’re sleeping with his dude,” she said in the NBC News interview. “So I noted that as well, because, OK, she’s advancing,” she said.
Emaza states in the suit that she went on to share how the meeting went after she was asked by Derulo’s manager, Frank Harris. When she expressed that she was caught off guard by Rosa being there, Derulo allegedly went off.
She says in the suit, “immediately lost control and began aggressively hitting his armrests screaming, ‘What does she have to do with you!? We weren’t going to tell you anything! We don’t have to tell you anything!” according to the suit. After that, she claims Derulo ghosted her.
Greatlfully, she was still able to sign her deal. However, she claims he allegedly failed to do his part in the deal and even ignored her messages.

Going into more detail about his alleged behavior, Emaza shared that Derulo once charged at her after she showed up late to their studio session in June 2022. She stated in the suit that she was late because of heavy Los Angeles traffic due to an event that was happening that day.
When she finally arrived, she claimed he was not only came at her in an agressive manner charged but berated her until he “realized the aggressive manner in which he invaded Plaintiff’s personal space and the inappropriate volume of his voice.” She told NBC news, “I had to step back … my hand just clutched my chest, because I was, like, I’ve, I’ve never been approached this way by anybody.”
Emaza claims that no one from his team who was there and witnessed what happened stepped in.
After mentioning his behavior to the record label, in July 2022, the executive acknowledged Derulo’s behavior and reportedly told Emaza “The Atlantic team wants you to win, but I can’t say the same for Jason.” According to her lawsuit, she later was dropped from Atlantic and his his imprint Future History on Sept. 6, 2022.
“I’m just trying to fight for what’s right, because what was done to me was not OK,” Emaza told the outlet. “And I wouldn’t want anybody else to go through what I went through. They wasted my time. They promised me things. … ‘Forget the contract.’ That’s what I was told. But if I wasn’t going to do, if I wasn’t doing my part according to this contract, I would be in trouble. I would be held accountable.”
Per NBC, her lawsuit accuses Derulo of sexual harassment, retaliation, breach of contract, a failure to remedy workplace harassment, and violation of California’s Civil Rights Act. She’s also seeking loss of earnings, deferred compensation, and other employment benefits as well as damages for emotional distress.
