A bizarre incident took place in New York City recently when a female hospital worker was accused of trying to steal a Citi Bike from a black teen who had already paid for it. The incident was captured on camera and quickly went viral, sparking outrage among many who saw it. The video shows the hospital worker attempting to take the bike away from the teen, who protests that he has already rented it out. The situation escalates as the woman becomes more aggressive and begins to physically try to take the bike away from the teen who keeps his composure during the heated exchange.
Sadly, this incident is just one of many examples of racially motivated incidents that have been sweeping through New York City in recent months. With that said, there has also been an alarming crime rate concerning theft and assault in the Big Apple, though there was no indication that the black teenager was even remotely aggressive or physical with the woman, who caused a scene for no apparent reason.

While the incident with the hospital worker and the man riding the Citi Bike may seem minor in comparison to some of the more violent crimes that have been taking place, it is nevertheless a troubling example of the breakdown of social norms and respect for others. It is particularly concerning that a healthcare worker, someone who is supposed to be dedicated to helping others, would behave in such a way. Social media users say that this viral video underscores the need for greater attention to be paid to issues of respect, empathy, and kindness in our society.
The unidentified woman has since been outed as working at the NYC Health + Hospitals Bellevue, which released a statement on the issue that’s already attracted millions of clicks on Twitter alone. They wrote, “We have recently become aware of an incident that occurred off-campus over the weekend and appears to involve one of our employees. We are sorry this happened and we are reviewing the incident.”
The statement continued, “NYC Health + Hospitals/Belleve is committed to providing the highest quality of care to all New Yorkers with dignity, cultural sensitivity, and compassion.”
New York City has been struggling to address the issue of racism for decades, but recent reports show that there is still much work to be done. The rates of racism in this city are alarming, with Black neighborhoods being policed at a disproportionately higher rate than white neighborhoods.

This is despite the fact that the total number of arrests, criminal summonses, and pedestrian stops decreased by 82% during Mayor de Blasio’s administration. The police have attributed these racial disparities to the higher volume of 911 and 311 calls in the city’s low-income neighborhoods, but reports show that Black communities experience an unequal share of police killings and more frequent contact with them in general.
