The death of Blanca Arcelia Guerrero, a 76-year-old grandmother, has sent shockwaves through the community of east Los Angeles County. Guerrero was hit and killed by a school bus while crossing the street in a marked crosswalk on Monday. The cause of her death was blunt force trauma, and the California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with her death.
Blanca was a mom of six, whose children were absolutely devastated when they were told she’d been killed in a crash. But they didn’t actually get that call until hours after the accident occurred. “The impact was so intense, it fractured her elderly body. It caused her to fall to the ground which broke her skull and she died instantly. Our last memory with our mother is seeing her poor lifeless body in the mortuary but she looked as beautiful as we can remember her,” Yvonne Torres said, adding that they’re holding the bus driver accountable for negligence. “She almost made it to the end of the crosswalk. She just had a couple of steps. Why couldn’t they just wait?”
The family is now pushing for the school bus driver to have their license revoked and face charges for her death. They added that the intersections have not been safe for a while, and while nothing can bring their mother back, the family hopes authorities will take action to make crossings safer for pedestrians. Guerrero’s daughters are offering a reward for information about her death, hoping that someone may have video footage of the incident which they plan to use against the driver.
Los Angeles is known for its bustling streets and heavy traffic, which unfortunately puts many people at risk for accidents, including those involving school buses. However, despite the growing number of deadly accidents involving buses in the United States, school buses remain one of the safest modes of transportation. According to statistics, school buses are eight times safer for children than regular cars, with a fatality rate of 0.2 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles travelled.
While it is comforting to know that school buses are relatively safe, it is still important to be aware of the risks that come with riding or being near one. Most school bus-related accidents involve children boarding or getting off the bus, which makes it crucial for drivers to be extra cautious during these times. On average, 131 people die annually in school bus-related crashes, and most of the children involved are between 5 and 13 years of age.
Despite the risks, it is important to note that buses are still considered a safe mode of transportation overall. However, there has been an increase in the number of deadly accidents involving buses and large trucks in recent years. In 2019 alone, there were a total of 2,734 fatal accidents involving buses and trucks, resulting in 3,087 deaths and 60,818 injuries. California, along with Florida and Texas, were considered the deadliest states for bus accidents.
