NBC Celebrates ‘Grand Crew’ Season 2 Premiere By Taking Over The ‘Black On The Block’ Monthly Festival In Downtown Los Angeles

The cast of NBC's "Grand Crew," toasted to the season two premiere of the sitcom on February 26 during the Black On The Block festival in downtown LA.

The cast of NBC’s “Grand Crew,” celebrated the season two premiere of the sitcom on February 26 during the Black On The Block festival in downtown LA.

The community-wide event shut down LA Center Studios in the heart of DTLA and featured more than 100 black-owned businesses and an exclusive performance from Warner Records artist Baby Tate. Additionally, fans of the show were treated to an exclusive season two screening and a Q&A session with cast members Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Aaron Jennings, Carl Tart, Grasie Mercedes, showrunner and creator Phil Augusta Jackson and executive producer Dan Goor.

Last year during an exclusive conversation with Hollywood Unlocked, Agusta Jackson, who is also a Writer/Producer/Director for the series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which Goor created, explained why shows such as “Grand Crew,” are of such high importance in regards to portraying the Black experience to the world.

“I think stories about Black friendship are always going to be important to see on screen,” Augusta Jackson said in part. “And stories that work against stereotypes and preconceived notions of what it is to be a Black man are important. Also, there is no singular Black experience, so my hope with the show is to reveal a unique tone and point of view on friendship and the world that people can enjoy.”

Augusta Jackson also spoke about what he feels makes the show, which he revealed was inspired by his own wine bar meet-ups with friends, unique and different from other productions he’s worked on.

“Grand Crew is different from other shows that I’ve worked on in that it delves into friends connecting over wine, which is something I do in real life,” he said. “Also topically, the show dives into themes relevant to the Black community in each episode which is different than some shows I’ve worked on. I think Grand Crew is similar to stuff I’ve worked on in that it’s all about interpersonal relationships — and it’s also about heightening the relatability of everyday life.”

The series, which currently holds a 100 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows a group of young black professionals dealing with drugs and the unpredictability of life and love in LA. Throughout all of their experiences, good and bad, they always find time to get together at their favorite bar to “wine down” and unpack it all. The show’s characters include Noah, a hopeless romantic too eager to settle down; Nicky, a go-getter in real estate who’s adventurous in romance; Sherm, a low-key genius who plays the dating odds; Anthony, whose true love is his career; Wyatt, who’s relieved to be married and out of the dating scene; and Fay, who’s recently divorced and looking to start fresh in LA. And just like wine, their friendship gets better with time.

Season one of the series averaged 5.8 million viewers overall between the ages of 18 to 49 during the six-episode run. The new season premieres on March 3 on NBC and will be available for streaming on Peacock.
