SIDNEY Is The Best Documentary Of 2022

We all know the legendary actor and activist, Sidney Poitier, but do we know his story?

This week Apple TV+ released SIDNEY, a profound documentary that honors the legendary Sidney Poitier and his legacy as an iconic actor, filmmaker, and activist at the center of Hollywood and the Civil Rights Movement. Sidney is produced by Oprah Winfrey and directed by Academy Award nominee Reginald Hudlin.

There is not one moment in the film where emotions aren’t touched as we learn how Sidney carried the weight of others’ dreams on his shoulder and how he paved the way for others, despite the struggles he faced. From his birth and upbringing in Cat Island in the Bahamas to the horrifying racism he faced in Miami and his move to NYC where he found his love for acting. All the moments, and friendships, leave you emotional throughout, including Oprah’s fondness of Sindey, the tears were definitely unavoidable.

“America began to say to me, you are not who you think you are.”

The bonds portrayed in the film, particularly that of  Poitier’s decades-long friendship with Harry Belafonte, set the tone for the love and companionship these two had, and as an audience, you connect with the film and get a real insight into their lives and the legacy they left. We also got some precious memories shred from, Barbera Streisand, Morgan Freeman, Quincy Jones, Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, Denzel Washington and more icons who were impacted by Sidney.

Sidney also highlights the most horrific pieces of American history, racism, segregation, and the fight people of color face daily for fundamental human rights. Sidney lived through it all and his powerful story couldn’t have been told better.

“If there were equality of opportunity in this business there would be fifteen Sidney Poitiers and ten to twelve Harry Belafontes. But there is not.”

Watch SIDNEY on Apple TV+ you will not regret it.
